Romania's hottest tourist spot is the Black Sea Coast (225 Km). There are nine main resorts, most of them named after mythical gods: Mamaia, Eforie North and South (famous for its curative black mud), Costinesti, Neptun-Olimp, Jupiter-Aurora, Venus, Saturn and Mangalia.
Constanta is Romania's largest port and second largest city. In ancient times Constanta was the Greek controlled town of Tomis, which the Romans later renamed after emperor Constantine (ruled AD 306-37) who fortified and developed the city. The Black Sea offers 100km of sea-coast resorts with beaches of fine golden sand, modern hotels and entertainment facilities for people of all ages. By the early 1900's Constanta was a fashionable seaside resort frequented by European royalty. The pituresque old town has a peaceful Mediterranean air. The city is the main transport hub on the Black Sea coast and the gateway to other resorts. Acording to legend, Mamaia resort gained its name from the desperate cries of a fair maiden, who, during the time Ottoman Empire, was kidnapped by a Turk and taken out to sea in a boat. As the wind howled, her frantic cries for her mother could be heard from miles around. Today, Mamaia is Romania's most popular resort with wide beaches, golden sand and a festival atmosphere. Lake Siutghiol (Mamaia Lake) offers waterskiing, yachting, windsurfing and rowing. Boats ferry tourists across the Siutghiol Lake to Ovidiu Island.
