Places around Constanta

Adamclisi - Tropaeum Trajani: In the south-western part of Adamclisi, archaeologists have uncovered remains of the Roman city of Tropaeum Traiani. The city was destroyed during Goth attacks in the 3rd century and not rebuild until the reign of Constantine I (ruled AD 306-37).

Histria - was settled in 657 BC by Greek traders and rapidly became a key commercial port, superseding Constanta. But subsequent Goth attacks coupled with the gradual sandlocking of the harbor led to its equally rapid decline. By the 7th century AD the town was abandoned. Archaeological relics undercovered at Histria are displayed in the Histria Museum. Visitors are free to walk around the original streets of the ancient fortified city. There are remains of Roman thermal baths, Christian basilica built with stones from the old theatre in the 6th century AD, and a Greek temple built at the end of 6th century BC.

Mangalia - Ruins of the ancient Callatis: Ancient Greek Callatis, now Mangalia, contains several minor archeological sites. It is a quiet town and attracts many tourists. Mangalia is the second most important harbour of Romania. The Esmahan Sultan Mosque is located on a pretty garden, just south of the town centre. It is an elegant mosque with a single minaret and is surrounded by a Muslim graveyard.

Costinesti- 9 km south of Eforie is a small fishing village. The village-resort hosted a pioneer youth camp in 1948 and an international student camp open in 1956. A national film festival, a young actors' festival and a jazz festival are all key events in July and August.

Neptun - Before the 1989 revolution, Neptun, 6 km south of Costinesti, was the exclusive resort of Romania's Communist Party. Ceausescu had his own luxury villa, fit for a king, built here. Today, the "party" is well and truly alive here. Neptun was built in 1960 between the Comorova forest and the sea, ensuring a lush setting for the artificial lakes and dispersed villas that makes this the most desirable of the Black Sea resorts. Shopping centers, discos, sports facilities, most modern hotels and terrific restaurants.
